Business Casual Dress Code for Client-Side Project Managers

Wracking your brain on what to wear for that upcoming meeting or visit to the client? We’re not fashion gurus here at Mastt, but having spent much time in the industry, we know what you need!

Being a project manager requires striking a balance between professionalism, comfort and knowing your attendees or stakeholders. Whether you’re a project owner, stakeholder, client-side project manager, or general contractor, business casual attire should be your go-to choice, allowing you to feel confident and look sharp during these important project interactions.

Read this guide (it’s best if you’re facing your wardrobe!), and you’ll find that picking out business casual attire isn’t that difficult after all.

Business Casual Dress Code for Men

Shirts.

Choose cotton or linen button-downs in neutral colors or subtle patterns for your shirt. Button-down shirts are a classic choice but keep the patterns minimal. It still projects professionalism while offering a touch of casualness.

Trousers.

Ditch the jeans (unless they’re dark wash and free of rips!). Well-fitting khaki, navy, or olive green chinos are your best bet for any project meetings or casual encounters. They offer a polished look that is still comfortable for a full day of meetings. However, jeans (without rips!) are more durable and acceptable for attending a construction site location.

Blazers.

While not essential, a blazer can elevate your dress-up game and bring some aura of power and experience. Choose a lightweight fabric like linen or cotton blend. Keep it casual and choose a neutral color that complements your shirt and trousers.

Sweaters.

Although sometimes climates get generally warm, meeting rooms can sometimes get chilly. A pro looking sweater can be a handy layering piece for your attire.  Choose a fine-knit pullover in a neutral color like navy or grey. Keep it simple and professional by avoiding anything too bulky or with loud patterns.

Leather shoes.

To cap (or bottom off?) the look, leather shoes or boots are a nice choice. Pick dressy oxfords in brown or black for a timeless and polished look. Loafers are another great option, offering a touch more casualness without sacrificing professionalism. Remember, keep the shoes clean and well-maintained for the best impression.

Accessories.

Don’t forget the finishing touch! The right accessories can elevate your attire. For men, a classic leather belt in brown or black complements your shoes and keeps your trousers secure. Choose a simple, sleek buckle to maintain a professional look.

A watch is another way to add a touch of personality. Choose a timeless design with a clean face --it speaks volumes about your attention to detail and professionalism.

Business Casual Dress Code for Women

Blouses / Tops.

Prioritize comfort and style when going to any meeting, conference, or simply a gathering among your team. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or silk blends. Pick classic silhouettes like button-downs or shell blouses in neutral colors or subtle patterns. They offer a polished look that is perfect for making a strong impression.

Pants / Skirts.

Women can select well-fitted dress pants in neutral colors like black, navy, or grey to ensure a professional and polished appearance.

Alternatively, knee-length or midi skirts in classic styles offer a feminine yet business-appropriate option. Both dress pants and skirts should be paired with a tailored blouse or blazer to complete the business casual look.

Dresses.

Dresses can be excellent for any encounter with your project peers, but pick ones that exude professionalism. Choose knee-length or midi dresses with a structured silhouette. Prioritize fabrics like Ponte knit or sheath dresses. They offer a polished look without sacrificing comfort. Keep extras minimal, and avoid anything too casual or revealing.

Cardigan/blazers.

Want to add polish and warmth to your entire ensemble? Layer a cardigan or blazer over your blouse or dress. Lightweight linen or cotton blends are perfect choices. Maintain a professional look by choosing a blazer or cardigan that complements your outfit’s color scheme.

Shoes.

When it comes to footwear, prioritize both style and practicality no matter the occasion. Closed-toe pumps offer a timeless and polished look, perfect for making a strong first impression.

For a touch more comfort, consider flats or wedges with a moderate heel. Remember, keep the shoes clean and well-maintained to complete your professional ensemble.

Handbags.

A structured leather handbag, or one in a similar material, elevates your entire look. Make sure it is big enough to hold your essentials like phone, notepad, and meeting materials.

Keep the size in check! Avoid anything too bulky or overpowering for a business setting. Stick to neutral colors like black, brown, or navy. These complement your outfit and project professionalism.

Accessories.

Can’t go without accessorizing your entire outfit? You can still add flair to your OOTD, but keep it simple and professional. A statement necklace or a pair of bold earrings can be distracting.

Instead, focus on timeless pieces that add a touch of polish. A delicate pendant necklace or a pair of classic pearl earrings are always safe bets. Remember, balance is key -- a well-paced watch or a sleek bracelet can complete your look without going overboard.

Additional Tips:

Consider the Venue.

Where you are going does indeed influence what to wear as a project manager. At a construction site, you can tone down your outfit slightly. Think dark-wash jeans (without rips!) paired with a collared shirt for a polished yet comfortable look. Project a professional image even in a casual setting by maintaining a neat and put-together appearance.

Freshness & Neatness.

We can’t stress this enough. Be it in a meeting or not, prioritize neatness. Always keep things real, and take a stack of breath mints with you.

Fresh breath teamed with ironed shirts, polished shoes, and wrinkle-free clothes all contribute to a professional impression, even in a relaxed setting. Showing you have taken the time to look sharp demonstrates respect for your colleagues and the importance of the meeting.

Personal Grooming.

Good personal grooming still matters. (As it should be in your everyday life!) Elegantly styled hair, trimmed nails, and minimal cologne or perfume show you take pride in your appearance and respect the professionalism of the meeting.

Conclusion

We hope you find this guide helpful for your next day of work when selecting what to pick out of your wardrobe. Whether you are someone who doesn’t have an idea what you should wear or someone who worries about overdressing, you can never go wrong with this business casual dress code.

The biggest takeaway, really, is to keep everything professional, present a clean look, and balance comfort and style in choosing the perfect outfit match.
